Collection: Wicker baskets
Antonio Cornelio Rendon has been working with his father from age nine, learning the techniques passed down by his family for generations to weave useful household objects from strands of straw called popotillo. Antonio first developed an interest in weaving as a young boy, watching his grandfather carefully manipulate the popotillos into various shapes and tools.
As an adult, he uses the same techniques to create intricate designs and masterful works of art. From his home in Tzintzuntzan, Michoacan, Antonio makes many objects, including Christmas ornaments and earrings, and has recently been recognized for his large complex estrellas, or stars. These large estrellas are amazingly complicated creations that artistically fascinates the eye when displayed on any wall.
His artwork won the 1st place national award from FONART, the national fund to protect and promote traditional Mexican handcrafts. In 2017, he traveled to Madrid, Spain to show his work and received an honorable mention from the Loewe Foundation as well as worldwide recognition.
